Abstract: This chapter charts the establishment, impact, and contribution of critical terrorism studies to research on terrorism. This chapter highlights how the normative and analytical concerns of critical security studies (CSS) have been applied to the analysis of terrorism over the past decade or so, leading to the establishment of critical terrorism studies (CTS). CTS was developed in reaction to scholarly concerns about terrorism studies’ perceived state centrism, pro-Western bias, and complicity with violent forms of counter-terrorism. While outlining the strengths of this approach to the analysis of terrorism the chapter also engages with some of the criticisms of CTS and charts some future directions CTS could take within its next phase of development.
