Chapter 6 in A Research Agenda for Terrorism Studies, 2023, pp 91-106 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Is terrorism studies a discipline? This chapter considers this and focuses on the Interdisciplinarity challenge facing terrorism studies. Interdisciplinarity is frequently praised as a concept, but true interdisciplinarity requires a high degree of integration between disciplines, either on methodological and/or theoretical levels. Within terrorism studies there are signs of significant methodological integration but theoretical integration is much more poorly developed. Perhaps unexpectedly, the chapter concludes that in order to be a truly successful interdisciplinary project, terrorism studies should actually become more robust as a discipline in itself. This could allow more systematic theorizing on the phenomenon, which could truly integrate various disciplinary approaches.
