Complex social psychology

.

Chapter 18 in The Atlas of Social Complexity, 2024, pp 223-233 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Social psychology plays a crucial role as the theoretical and empirical link between the dynamics of human psychology and the macroscopic patterns of social systems. It is all about social interaction, socialization, small groups, values, and so forth. We touch upon some of these topics in our review of The Self (Chapter 10) and in Collective Behaviour, Mass Psychology and Social Movements (Chapter 19). Still, many of these topics, particularly from a sociological perspective, are not central to the complexity sciences. Two fields of study address this absence: dynamical social psychology and computational social science (i.e., social simulation). This chapter explores these two fields to inspire readers to see the importance of integrating a complex social psychology into their various studies of social complexity.
