Getting philosophically real
.
Chapter 31 in The Atlas of Social Complexity, 2024, pp 446-454 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
In the spirit of getting philosophically real, as a final stop in our tour of complexity-friendly methods, this chapter outlines the philosophical programme of research we find most useful as a ground for studying social complexity. Building on the work of, among others, Roy Bhaskar, Margaret Archer, and Malcolm Williams, our approach is complex realism. We use the chapter to outline its primary tenets. We seek to continue the debates around these topics, as even our own grounding in complex realism remains unfinished and in need of much work. It is a start - the clearing away of new territory for others to join in the work.
