Theme 6: the unfinished space

.

Chapter 32 in The Atlas of Social Complexity, 2024, pp 455-476 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The complexity sciences are a celebration of the unfinished. This chapter discusses the meaning and merits of unfinished and incomplete spaces, and highlights ways in which such spaces can be created to foster the creativity that is needed to overcome intellectual dead-end streets. To that end, we draw extensively from the experiences of our interviewees, and take cues from arts, music and dance. We explore what one can do to foster emergent outcomes, both at the personal and at an organizational level, and reflect on the roles of the scientist in the face of overwhelming social complexity. But before all that, we first revisit the main journeys we undertook for this Atlas, as summarized per chapter.
