States and markets in innovation research and innovation policy: achievements and challenges

Charles Edquist

Chapter 16 in The New Role of the State for Transformative Innovation, 2026, pp 260-277 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter addresses ten “themes” (or conclusions) . It starts with conclusions on the various themes that the author has addressed in many articles, books, and reports over the decades. Each conclusion constitutes a section heading, followed by some of the arguments in a much shorter form than when the conclusions were reached originally – over the decades. Therefore, much of the text is heavily based on the author's earlier work, and the chapter forms a kind of synthesis of parts of the author's earlier research results, and . It thus includes many citations to these earlier publications. In short, the chapter addresses problems that are, or have been, important as challenges in innovation research and innovation policy. Hopefully this may contribute to the development of the future state of the art.
