Innovation and economic well-being

Luc Soete and Bart Verspagen

Chapter 4 in The New Role of the State for Transformative Innovation, 2026, pp 62-78 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Innovation is typically seen as a result of research and development, and as causing economic growth in the sense of an increase in productivity and per capita income. The authors argue that economic well-being also has other dimensions, and try to quantify this using a database with many different indicators of well-being. They relate these indicators of well-being to innovation, and find that differences in well-being in the European Union are related to differences in innovation.
