The nexus: concepts and frameworks

Tamara Avellán and Mario Roidt

Chapter 2 in Handbook on the Water-Energy-Food Nexus, 2022, pp 16-35 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The 'nexus' has been a widely debated concept in the past 10 years. The discussions cover conceptual aspects in the areas of its definition, its boundaries, the inclusion of resources and sectors, the concepts of trade-offs and interlinkages, the benefits in resource use and governance. The conversations also span methodological questions of models and modelling in the bio-physical roam but also beyond. The nexus has sparked controversies in when to integrate whom to make which kind of decision thus entering deeply into participation and transdisciplinary research. This chapter tries to show some of the aspects of these very diverse debates while highlighting critical research gaps that need to be tackled to move beyond the scientific debates and towards usable application.
