The relevance and challenges in communicating the nexus

Abstract: Beyond academic debates, the nexus remains a new concept for many practitioners and decision-makers, with often only a fuzzy delineation (intersection of water, energy, food, land, climate, biodiversity, health, etc.) and limited attraction. In addition, its association to 'complexity' often hampers the uptake in solution-oriented and sector-specific planning and management, whilst simplified approaches are discarded as 'too obvious'. Proper communication about the nexus is needed to enable meaningful discourses and discussions about trade-offs and synergies with the right people who hold the power to change management across sectors and silos, and to engage stakeholders. The chapter addresses reasons for communicating the nexus, existing terminologies and their perception, the target audiences, and tools and indications for better communicating about the nexus.
