Energy security and the energy transition
Molly A. Walton
Chapter 5 in Handbook on the Water-Energy-Food Nexus, 2022, pp 81-95 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The world is not on track to meet its climate and sustainable development goals. Dramatically reducing greenhouse gas emissions while ensuring energy remains affordable, reliable and secure will require structural changes to the way we produce and consume energy and necessitate a shift in our economies, governance and societies. The energy transition will also introduce new energy security challenges that may require an update to the framework historically used to assess risks to the energy system. This chapter provides an overview of the energy system today and what it would take to achieve the energy transition, followed by an evaluation of how that transition could impact the energy-water nexus and energy security. It will conclude with a discussion on what it will take to reach a near-term peak in emissions while also ensuring energy remains affordable, reliable, secure and sustainable.
