Chapter 8 in The Crisis of Governance, 2023, pp 157-166 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Governance is in crisis but is recoverable. There does need to be greater accountability, more transparency, better and fairer delivery of services and more inclusivity and detection and prosecution of those who enrich themselves by corrupt practice. Governance needs to work, and be seen to work. This means that governance needs to be even better at delivering services, based on the rule of law, working from an evidence base, with high levels of efficiency and effectiveness, for the general benefit, and with inclusivity and accountability. All these points are already in the model they just need to be followed through. A governance based on traditional or charismatic authority leads to authoritarianism and autocracy, but Weberian rational-legal authority leads to democracy. Good governance is something familiar and has served the world well. But it is in crisis.
