Abstract:
Care technologies encompass a diversity of purposes, from streamlining administrative tasks to monitoring care recipients and offering companionship. We elucidate how long-term care for older adults is being transformed through the use of technologies across different care settings. Technologies in care can lead to positive outcomes, such as faster administrative processes, improved quality of life, and social connectedness, but they can also reduce the need for personal presence, disrupting traditional notions of time and space in care. In order for technology initiatives to work, there needs to be a system-wide thinking approach supported by government investment and training, as well as motivation and capability to engage with care technology on the part of older adults. We conclude by questioning whether the contemporary pursuit of technological innovation is impeding the development and funding of important non-technological innovations in care.
