Chapter 18 in Handbook on the Economics of Disasters, 2022, pp 389-399 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
There is limited public discourse and understanding about the history and science of weather modiï¬ cation, though scientists have researched, tested, and implemented numerous methods of weather interventions for six decades. The general trend of increasing exposure to extreme weather events prompts us to offer a summary and general evaluation of weather modification technologies. In this chapter, we summarize information about weather modiï¬ cation activity globally with an emphasis on the potential for reducing the severity of and damages from extreme weather. The chapter also presents a brief discussion of approaches to evaluating beneï¬ ts and costs of such programs.
