Abstract:
The role of entrepreneurship in disaster recovery remains underappreciated. Entrepreneurs do much of the work of rebuilding a community in the wake of disasters. In this chapter, we discuss the entrepreneur as an agent of social change, building on and expanding from the definition emphasized in market process theory to include those seeking both monetary profit and social reward from acting as a change agent in their community. These entrepreneurs identify social problems and identify means to fix them. From there we examine three major problems entrepreneurs are confronted with as they fulfill their role: helping disaster survivors (a) manage uncertainty in the post-disaster environment, (b) repair their damaged homes, businesses, and community spaces and replace what was destroyed, and (c) negotiate the difficult politics of disaster recovery.
