International real estate investments: issues and research agendas
Hyung Min Kim
Chapter 11 in A Research Agenda for Real Estate, 2022, pp 203-223 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
International real estate investment is becoming increasingly important as part of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) activities. This chapter reviews key research agendas of real estate FDI which is a combined outcome of global capital/human flows, investment decisions, macro-economic dynamics, and institutional changes. With the growing volume in real estate FDI, it is one of the important drivers in transforming urban space by creating new space and enlarging the real estate industry. This chapter outlines what this activity is and describes key issues in carrying out research about real estate FDI, by using a case study of real estate FDI in Vietnam where FDI in real estate is the second-largest industrial type after FDI in manufacturing. Along with the review of real estate FDI literature and the case study of Vietnam, this chapter identifies research agendas.
