Innovation as process
.
Chapter 4 in The Idea of Technological Innovation, 2020, pp 49-74 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Two concepts serve to make sense of and rationalize the discourse on technological innovation: process and system. Technological innovation is a process in time, a series of activities whose ultimate purpose is technological innovation. This is the subject of Chapter 4. Technological innovation is also a system, composed of diverse institutions, all acting toward a shared purpose: the use and diffusion of technological invention in practice. The system dimension of technological innovation is addressed in Chapter 5. Both chapters highlight the role of practitioners (engineers, managers, policymakers) as theorists of innovation.
