Chapter 4 in Organizing Matters, 2020, pp 86-110 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The first of the four chapters detailing the findings from the field, this chapter explains why trade unions need new members despite the institutional possibility of engaging in social-wide bargaining, which is not directly dependent on membership rates. Explanations span instrumental financial concerns and ideological accounts. At the centre are concerns about dwindling power resources and declining legitimacy to the privileged position accorded to trade unions by the state.
