Calibration and confounding conditions in a large-N example
.
Chapter 11 in Qualitative Comparative Analysis, 2024, pp 167-194 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter takes readers through the various steps of a QCA study using the example of regional innovation in Europe. The example is a large-N study with limited case knowledge. The example discusses all steps of a QCA study, from casing and calibration to truth table analysis and the interpretation of configurations into plausible causal claims. The chapter familiarizes readers with the fsQCA software and introduces the notions of core and contributory conditions. It argues that robustness tests are not particularly relevant for an interpretive method like QCA. The chapter explains how researchers can enrich their QCA study by investigating confounding conditions.
