Abstract:
Set analytical methods like QCA are designed to capture the complexity of causality. Since QCA compares cases (case level) rather than correlates variables (population level), it can account for complex causality in ways that correlational methods cannot. Complex causality is (1) configurational. Configurations rather than individual conditions explain the outcome on the case level. It is (2) equifinal because different cases may achieve the same outcome for different reasons - that is, configurations. It is also (3) asymmetrical because the reasons we fail differ from the reasons we succeed. The configurations explaining the presence of the outcome are different from those explaining its absence.
