Artificial intelligence for long-term care in later life

Barbara Barbosa Neves and Maho Omori

Chapter 31 in Handbook on the Sociology of Health and Medicine, 2023, pp 488-503 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter discusses the development of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies for later life care, focusing on long-term care facilities - also known as nursing homes or residential aged care. We draw on insights from the sociologies of technology and ageing to frame the intersections between AI and care. For this, we engage with sociological approaches that critique technological determinism (i.e., assumptions that technology on its own determines social change) and that challenge the deficit view of ageing as personal and social costs. Through these critical lenses, we review AI advancements and explore examples of AI uses and outcomes for older people (aged 65+) living in long-term care facilities. We conclude by discussing opportunities, challenges, and socio-ethical implications of AI technologies for later life, from autonomy to ageism.
