Chapter 5 in Handbook on the Sociology of Health and Medicine, 2023, pp 76-90 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter explores contemporary theoretical approaches to gender and health. It takes its impetus from Judith Lorber’s (2022) recent exploration, within sociology at large, of the ‘new gender paradox’, or the need for researchers to utilise the gender binary in order to examine the inequalities it produces, whilst also analysing it critically in order contribute to its fragmentation and eventual disappearance. It begins by reviewing how gender has been conceptualised, drawing attention to binarism, cisgendering and the overall neglect of non-normative gender in the study of health, illness and healthcare. It then draws on three global case studies: gender-based sexual violence during conflict; pregnancy and birth; and COVID-19 to illustrate the ‘new gender paradox’ in the analysis of health.
