Sustainable Development Goal 4: Quality education

Irma Eloff

Chapter 12 in Handbook on Public Policy and Food Security, 2024, pp 120-130 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Education has a multivariate role in the pursuit of supporting the Sustainable Development Goals of Agenda 2030. Sustainable Development Goal 4 on Quality Education is an integral part of the 17 Global Goals. Yet at the same time, Education For Sustainable Development is critical for attaining all the goals. This chapter reflects on the development of the notion of Quality Education in key policy documents over half a century. The four pillars of education, ‘Learning to know’, ‘Learning to do’, ‘Learning to live together’ and ‘Learning to be’, are interrogated in policy documents. The chapter argues that whilst the four pillars of education inform understandings of Quality Education, they also provide pathways to connect all the Sustainable Development Goals and strengthen Education for Sustainable Development.
