Abstract:
Marine ecosystems play a critical role in ensuring global food security by providing high-quality, low-cost protein and micronutrients helpful in combatting the burden of malnutrition. The Sustainable Development Goal 14 of the United Nations Agenda 2030 provides an international framework for protecting marine ecosystems and underscores the need for sustainable fisheries. However, while the SDG seeks to conserve and ensure sustainable use of marine areas, human activities (overfishing, pollution, illegal fishing and urbanisation) undermine the marine ecosystem’s sustainability and resilience. There is an urgent need to strengthen policy to meet the targets of SDG 14 while accounting for the trade-offs that could potentially have negative consequences on progress made in achieving the other SDG goals.
