An overview of Sustainable Development Goal 2: Zero hunger

Jannie Armstrong and Scott Drimie

Chapter 5 in Handbook on Public Policy and Food Security, 2024, pp 41-51 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: As the successor to the MDGs and the 1996 World Food Summit, SDG2 represents a continuation and expansion of global commitments to eliminate hunger. SDG2 pivots on the notion that progress on reducing food insecurity is intrinsic to progress on other goals. This places the elimination of hunger in a central position in SDG discourse. Equally, it assumes that other Goals will include this in their thinking. This chapter examines how the notion of interconnectivity represents a conceptual step forward and an operational weakness. The interconnectivity of the SDGs is consistent with emerging discourse around food systems and we consider the implications of food systems thinking for SDG2. SDG2’s lack of engagement at the point of measurement is found to be a structural flaw, as indicators for obesity and dietary quality are omitted, effectively limiting consideration of such issues in global discourse, as they do not support the attainment of SDG2 itself.
