Where do we begin to create sustainable food systems?

Abstract:
This chapter explores the theory of change in the Stockholm Resilience Centre’s food-centred model for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals of Agenda 2030. In ordering the goals by priority into ‘biosphere,’ ‘social,’ and ‘economic’ clusters, the model offers a critical pathway for pursuing the SDGs prioritising food security and containing human activity within the safe operating spaces of the biosphere. Patterns of negative resilience need to be disrupted and replaced with positive ones, building on the assets and capabilities of diverse socioecological systems. Commerce, industry and technology can drive these changes, but only if economic growth and productivity are employed for transformation, rather than being goals in themselves, requiring new incentives, regulations and global cooperation.
