Chapter 8 in Handbook on Public Policy and Food Security, 2024, pp 80-89 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Poverty has significant implications for economic growth and development. This chapter discusses different approaches to understanding poverty and related critique. It highlights applications of these approaches through poverty alleviation strategies undertaken by different governments to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal one (SDG1). Based on the analysis, it is clear that policy interventions may differ based on the approach, but, poverty is a dynamic and multidimensional concept. It is widely regarded that the concept of poverty goes beyond the income dimension to human capabilities, including standard of living, health, and education. Thus, enabling environments which include social, economic, political, infrastructural, or climatic factors must be considered when formulating policies for sustainable poverty alleviation.
