Abstract: This chapter sets out to explain the underlying forces that underpin the current so-called US-China trade war. It is argued that the crisis in the WTO, tensions in the Asia-Pacific region, and bilateral US-China trade war are part of the crisis of global governance ushered in by the changing geography of global trade and economic power. The chapter argues that these three levels of economic engagement between the United States and China are inter-related and must be analyzed together as part of the US-China struggle for global hegemonic power. This research argues that the current crisis offers the world an opportunity to re-build and strengthen a global governance system that is underpinned by new norms of solidarity, mutual co-existence, balanced development and equity.
