The trade Zax: explaining when regulatory disputes escalate into trade wars
Gary Winslett
Chapter 6 in Research Handbook on Trade Wars, 2022, pp 112-129 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
In this chapter, I explain why some disputes over regulatory trade barriers escalate into broader trade war. I contend that they are more likely to do so when they breed greater mistrust or bring in stakeholders that care more about maintaining their country's current regulatory stances than about resolving the broader dispute. In order to demonstrate how these causal mechanisms operate, I compare three case studies related to intellectual property and the US-China relationship: audiovisual products, trademarks and counterfeiting, and forced technology transfers.
