Travel behaviour: is there a role for public transport?
John D. Nelson
Chapter 16 in Handbook of Travel Behaviour, 2024, pp 303-319 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Understanding the factors that contribute to the attractiveness of public transport has long been a fertile area of research. Notwithstanding the proliferation of Apps that purport to promote seamless travel and the more targeted personalised marketing methods now available, the public transport sector continues to face an uphill struggle when seeking to preserve market share and grow patronage. Against this background the COVID-19 pandemic presents one of the most serious threats to the future of public transport in living memory. This chapter considers how public transport users have adjusted their behaviour in response to the pandemic and the variety of responses that operators and authorities have introduced in order to encourage a return to public transport. Attention is given to both urban and rural areas. The importance of knowing your customer emerges as a key aspect of any strategy to improve the attractiveness of public transport.
