Abstract:
It is vital to understand travel behavior in circumstances of extreme conditions since transportation network performance is largely dependent on how travelers respond during extreme events. In this chapter, we focus on two aspects of extreme events based on empirical evidences: (1) people’s travel behavior in case of transit disruptions due to extreme weather conditions, and (2) changes in travel behavior and mobility patterns due to the social and economic disturbances from lockdowns and travel restrictions caused by COVID-19 pandemic. We build our findings based on two comprehensive surveys conducted in Chicago, Illinois with focuses on transit disruptions due to the extreme weather conditions and COVID-19 pandemic. Our findings provide concrete evidence that major changes have occurred in people’s travel behavior during such events.
