Chapter 25 in Handbook of Travel Behaviour, 2024, pp 505-512 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter is the closing summary of the Handbook of Travel Behaviour and discusses the major emerging themes, which are organised into two categories: 'Conceptual and Analytical' aspects and 'Contextual and Empirical' aspects. Key areas highlighted under these themes include: the profound effects of effects of virtualisation and digital technologies on the where, when and how people travel; the need for greater public participation in all stages of design, collection, and analysis of data as well as the communication of findings; greater understanding of the differing environmental, social and cultural contexts that travel behaviour takes place within, and corresponding impacts. To date, the field is dynamically moving and evolving depending on the geographical context. The best that can be hoped for is to comprehend these differences and do our best to reflect them in the approaches that we take and the recommendations that we make.
