Integrated land use and transport models

Abstract: The urban transportation planning process that started in the 1950s led to the emergence of several schools of thought on how to develop integrated land use and transport models (ILUTMs). While early efforts mainly focused on using such models to examine future traffic conditions, the objective shifted in the 1990s towards addressing the sustainable outcomes of urban growth and development scenarios. This chapter will provide an overview of the various schools of thought within the realm of ILUTMs. The discussion will highlight the key assumptions used to formulate these models and shed light on the data needs and technical methods employed. The chapter will also discuss some of the more prominent ILUTMs that have been implemented to date. Finally, the chapter will offer some thoughts about the potential applications of ILUTMs to examine the future impacts of connected and autonomous vehicles scenarios.
