Common themes for a PPP research agenda

Graeme A. Hodge and Carsten Greve

Chapter 17 in A Research Agenda for Public–Private Partnerships and the Governance of Infrastructure, 2022, pp 349-369 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This concluding chapter outlines what have learned from the various chapters about infrastructure PPPs and the ways they are governed today. Many insights are certainly visible within each of the chapters, but rather than summarise each of these individually, we will take more of a meta-view of the terrain covered in order to articulate broad future research directions. This will point to common themes that have become visible across the whole volume. This closing chapter outlines six themes in our PPP research journey to date: Towards fresh research approaches, new theories on the block, public-private balance financialised everything, stronger governance, and a global phenomenon. For each theme, we outline where we appear to have moved from, where we have now landed and why research interest in this theme is likely to continue. We then discuss some of the dynamics of future directions.
