Chapter 7 in Science Evaluation and Status Creation, 2020, pp 135-152 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: In Chapter 7, I place my findings and analyses against a broader backdrop of literatures and phenomena than before. I begin by suggesting theoretical contributions that spring from my study of the ERC. These contributions primarily revolve around a number of antecedents through which the status-creating authority of intermediaries is constructed, but they also concern the consequences of and disruptions to this authority. Then, I discuss a number of field-level implications that deal with competition, stratification, and individualization in the wake of StG funding allocations. Finally, I acknowledge certain limitations that pertain to my data, to my empirical context, and to my object of study. However, by extension, I suggest that these limitations also constitute exciting paths for future research into the dynamics of status creation at the nexus of intermediaries, candidates, and audiences.
