Chapter 11 in Handbook of Research on Artificial Intelligence, Innovation and Entrepreneurship, 2023, pp 173-187 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The world is on the verge of big changes. The new reality is boosted by both new challenges of the external environment and new breakthrough technologies. This chapter explores the opportunities and limitations of artificial intelligence (AI) adoption as the most breakthrough innovation of digital transformation, focusing on the energy sector. We analyzed AI policies in leading countries and revealed that AI development intensifies in parallel with the adoption of AI tools by the energy industry. Our review shows that AI can help to achieve global and ambitious SDGs, as well as it is capable of making the energy industry more sustainable. The chapter presents key potential applications of AI in the energy sector together with key related AI adoption challenges. We put more attention to the possible applications of AI solutions in the oil and gas industry as the backbone of the energy industry.
