Abstract:
The experience and meaning of youth and adulthood have undergone significant changes during the 21st century. This chapter draws on the Australian Life Patterns longitudinal study of youth and adulthood to reflect critically on the conceptual tools used to understand the intersecting transitions of individuals and society, through an analysis of the lives of individuals from two generations of Australians (corresponding to the popular notion of Generations X and Y). Drawing on the concept of livelihood resilience, this chapter analyses the resources and subjectivities mobilised across generations to build viable lives. Case studies drawn from each of these generations during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in Australia in 2020 highlight the intersections between different life domains, the enduring significance of both personal and structural supports and the changing nature of youth and adulthood.
