Belonging and participation: perspectives of youth from socio-cultural margins

Abstract: The article focuses on conditions for belonging and participation from the perspective of marginal youth: 1) youth with disabilities in a society that highlights embodied ableism, 2) youth with multicultural or immigrant backgrounds in a racializing society, and 3) youth living in peripheral hinterlands with sparse possibilities to participate in education and labour, as well as in shared free-time or civic activities. We claim that conditions for participation can be seen best when these kinds of social margins are under scrutiny. According to our analysis, the dominant criteria of participation and belonging are hard to reach if one is not white, urban, and capable in many ways- which further means many kinds of social inequalities in processes where different youth aim at reaching their dreams and hopes.
