Abstract:
Green technological change relies upon the generation of new knowledge in green domains. Most of the extant economic literature on eco-innovation has focused on the economic drivers and impact associated to generation and adoption dynamics. Much attention has been devoted on inducement mechanisms and the role of environmental regulatory frameworks. Only recently the processes behind the generation of green knowledge have become object of increasing interest. The enquiry into the antecedents of green technological change has gained momentum both at the micro and meso levels of aggregation. This Chapter surveys the main conceptual issues related to the economics of green knowledge production, stressing the importance of the hybridization of concepts proposed within the recombinant knowledge and innovation capabilities approaches. Recombinant creation capabilities emerge as a crucial asset to improve the capacity to generate green inventions. We discuss recent empirical evidence in this strand of analysis and propose some avenues for further research.
