The knowledge spillover theory of entrepreneurship

David B. Audretsch and Erik E. Lehmann

Chapter 39 in Elgar Encyclopedia on the Economics of Knowledge and Innovation, 2022, pp 317-324 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: In the past decades the knowledge spillover theory of entrepreneurship (KSTE) was established in the literature linking endogenous growth theory to knowledge spillovers and entrepreneurship theory. This Chapter provides a systematization of the theory, which takes stock of the knowledge developed so far, surveys the rationale, the evolution and conditions of the KSTE as a field of interest within the economics of knowledge and innovation. The distinctive questions addressed by KSTE as a field are "What is the role of knowledge spillovers in entrepreneurship?", "Where do these knowledge spillovers come from?" and "What is the impact of knowledge-based entrepreneurship on society?" This chapter provides answers to these questions by adopting a perspective of the channels through which knowledge spillovers occur and increase economic growth and thus societal wealth.
