Abstract:
Health costs, mortality risk and the benefits of healthy choices are frequently misestimated and undervalued by individuals, resulting in too many health risks relative to the social (and sometimes individual) optimal and increasing pressure on the health system. Regulatory requirements and financial incentives are not always politically or functionally feasible. Thus, researchers and health policy advocates may need to examine non-regulatory, low-cost behavioural interventions in order to improve health and welfare. Research suggests that both perception and behaviour can be changed through well-designed behavioural interventions. We discuss key research related to understanding health-related social norms, the role of peer effects and networks in preference formation and diffusion and how to increase healthy decisions through nudges.
