The common-sense economy

Chapter 6 in Handbook of Research Methods in Behavioural Economics, 2023, pp 104-118 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter presents the theory of social representations and various examples of its implementation for the study of objects or economic phenomena. It describes how, when these objects or phenomena are apprehended by non-expert audiences, they can be simplified in their nature, determinants or effects. It also describes how these social representations can lead individuals to make decisions or adopt behaviours that significantly deviate from economic rationality. Finally, it indicates some areas where the consideration of this common-sense economic knowledge could have a societal interest.
