The future: new directions of construction economics research

George Ofori

Chapter 24 in Research Companion to Construction Economics, 2022, pp 514-538 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This final chapter of the book provides a brief summary of the book and considers some issues which can be further studied in order to contribute to the development of Construction Economics. It is suggested that whereas Construction Economics is an important subject owing to the strategic role of the industry it studies and builds knowledge on, it has not developed significantly; it has been left behind by many other sub-fields of Economics. The aspects which require to be explored in order to develop Construction Economics are outlined. After considering various possible ways, a path towards a better future for Construction Economics is presented. It is stressed that progress will require a systematic and concerted effort, that certain prerequisites should be in place, and that leadership and action by all researchers in the field will be required. Some possible actors are identified.
