Nicholas Oresme: Treatise on Money (1358)

.

Chapter 11 in A Source Book on Early Monetary Thought, 2020, pp 70-88 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: 12,100 words. Oresme argues that money belongs to the people, not government. Like his master Buridan, he criticizes the practice of inflating the money supply. Increasing the money supply enriches government at the expense of the people. This work contains the first statement of Gresham’s Law.
