Measuring travel behavior

Abstract: This chapter proposes an overview of the most important concepts associated with the measurement of travel behavior. It first discusses the main usages of travel behavior data and illustrates what travel behavior is through the definition of typical variables used to describe its modal, temporal, and spatial attributes. Features of travel surveys, typically used to capture behaviors, are then discussed along with presentation of important sources of administrative data that can relevantly contribute to the analysis and modeling of travel behaviors. Advantages, disadvantages as well as critical limitations of both types of data sources are discussed. Other data necessary to understand travel behavior and that must be gathered along any travel data collection process are identified. Key indicators used to monitor travel behavior are then exposed along with their possible estimation using various data sources. Finally, challenges related to blind spots in existing data as well as transformation occurring, namely due to technological changes and the Covid-19 pandemics, are discussed.
