Abstract: This chapter presents how accessibility-based approaches can contribute to more human-centered communities. The concept of accessibility addresses individuals’ needs to access opportunities that are spatially distributed across a region to fully participate in the society they live in. It thereby measures the joint performance of land-use and transport systems, but from the perspective of individuals. Increasing access to destinations, especially by active and public transport, has been shown to be a key determinant of social inclusion and well-being. This chapter presents several accessibility measures and discusses how specific indicators have been used in land-use and transport plans. It concludes with ideas for the future of accessibility measurement, including developing collaborations between researchers and practitioners to bridge the gap between theory and practice.
