New mobility systems and land use

João de Abreu e Silva and Vishnu Baburajan

Chapter 20 in Handbook on Transport and Land Use, 2023, pp 350-367 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter aims to provide an overview of new mobility modes and services and their relevant land-use implications. This overview, although briefly mentioning autonomous vehicles and Mobility as a Service, is mostly focused on shared-mobility systems. These include bike-sharing, scooter-sharing and several car-based systems - ride-sharing, ride-hailing and car-sharing. The main characteristics of these systems are presented as well as their differences and similarities. The chapter also discusses the influence that land-use patterns could have on the deployment and success of these systems and how they influence travel behavior patterns. Based on these discussions, the chapter addresses the important aspects in which these systems failed to live up to their promoted benefits, the impacts on other modes and equity impacts. Avenues for future research and policymaking implications are offered.
