Abstract: This chapter explores technology and Internet of Things (IoT) in metropolitan areas, specifically how new mobility solutions have the potential to radically redesign the shape of cities. It discusses how transportation technology can play a vital role in developing communities that are livable, sustainable, affordable, and equitable, despite the tensions that will emerge as private companies gain more control over transportation services and data. These innovations have land use implications that could contribute to urban sprawl but also could offer unparalleled transportation access. In this regard planning management offers a system to guide IoT solutions in a manner consistent with the goals of civic sustainability and social justice.
