Chapter 6 in Handbook on Transport and Land Use, 2023, pp 91-106 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter provides an overview of existing studies on interactions between land use and transport from a behavioral and psychological perspective, and clarifies important research gaps. First, travel behavior is described in the context of the built environment. Second, features of travel behavior decision-making are summarized. Third, research on social psychology related to travel and other life behaviors is reviewed. Fourth, associations between travel behavior and other life choice behaviors (residential behavior, work, household budget, energy consumption, health, neighborhood, education and learning, household life, leisure and recreation) are illustrated, showing links with social psychological research. Fifth, research based on the life-oriented approach for addressing the interactions between land use and transport is introduced, with a focus on multiple self-selection issues, life-course interactions, and multiple behavioral changes. Finally, this chapter concludes with a summary of key findings and discussion of future research issues.
