Sociological approaches to mobilities

Abstract: Over the last twenty years, spatial mobility has become an important subject in sociology. This is how the field of mobilities studies was born and gradually developed, and which concerns land-use planning in particular. This chapter explores this abundant literature and attempts to identify the main advances for land-use planning. It is divided into three main parts. The first part offers some reflections on the direct link between the sociological concept of ‘mobilities’ and land-use and transport planning. The second presents the notion of ‘motility’, which operationalizes an actor-centered approach to mobility, whether individual or collective. Finally, the third part presents the contributions of a motility approach to understanding mobility, particularly in the field of land-use planning.
