Herbert Simon: a daughter’s view
Katherine Simon Frank
Chapter 1 in Elgar Companion to Herbert Simon, 2024, pp 5-11 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Sometimes a person (the actor) does work that comes to the attention of a wide audience (the public), whereupon the public believes it ‘knows’ the actor. However, this ‘knowing’ encompasses almost none of the richness or roundness of the actor’s whole self, leaving much room for speculation, assumptions and fantasy. Here, Herbert Simon’s daughter shares vignettes from parts of her father’s daily life rarely, if ever, known by the public, thus giving the reader of this volume the privilege of better knowing the person behind his ideas and publications. Herbert Simon, though modest and private, liked to be known for who he was, beyond his achievements and public persona.
